Aadujeevitham ( Book Review )

           

Aadujeevitham is a fiction novel written by Benyamin. It was published by Penguin books on 15 July 2008. This Malayalam novel is about an abused migrant worker in South Arabia. The novel was first published in serial form in Mathrubhumi Illustrated Weekely. The novel is based on real life events and was a best seller in Kerala. The original malayalam version of Aadujeevitham has gone 70 reprints. The novel is about the story of Najeeb Muhammed who always dreamed of working in Gulf countries.
But he achieves his dream only to be propelled by a series of incidents into a slave like existence herding goats in the middle of Saudi desert. Najeeb plans to escape from there. The english translation of the novel appeared in the long list of Man Asian Literary Prize 2012 and in the short list of the dsc prize for South Asian Literature 2013. Najeeb was forced to do works and steadily starts to identify himself with the goats. He considered himself as one of them. He talks with them,eats with them, sleeps with them and virtually lives the life of a goat. One day with the help of a Somalian worker Najeeb and his friend tries to escape from there. On the way they faces many challenges. Najeeb finally reaches kerala at the end of the story. Film director blessy acclaimed that he is planning to direct a movie based on this novel.
